Piano Lessons

Our Piano Teachers
Since piano lessons are the highest in demand - we have more teachers for this instrument than any other! To find out more about our piano teachers click here.

Piano Enrollment
To enroll in piano lessons simply fill out our enrollment form. We look forward to working with you!

About the Piano
The piano is a perfect instrument for the beginning musician. Students learn how to read both treble and bass clef - in turn making a great transition to learning any other instrument. Although not a requirement, we highly recommend children begin with 1 year of piano before learning the instrument of their choice.

Age to Begin
Students may begin playing piano at age 5. Generally, the best time is when a student begins kindergarten or when they know their alphabet and are able to count to 10. Some teachers recommend that a student begin slightly later such as in 1st or 2nd grade as the learning process will be more accelerated at that age.

Obtaining an Instrument

1. Electric Keyboard
Purchasing a keyboard is the least expensive route. It also has the added bonus of being able to use headsets so no one can hear you practice! Electric pianos never need to be tuned and take up less space than their acoustic relative. However, if you are deciding on an electrical piano there are a few things we recommend:

·        A keyboard that is no smaller then 66 keys [a full keyboard has 88 keys].

·        The keyboard must have full sized keys.

·        The keyboard must have weighted keys.

·        The keyboard should come with a pedal.

These features insure that the instrument is most like an acoustic piano.

2. Acoustic Upright Piano
Nothing can beat the sound of a real piano! Upright piano’s are often treated like a piece of furniture in the home- many people sell their used pianos cheaply in the Kansas City Star, at garage sales, or on Craigslist! You will also find uprights at any piano store. Uprights don’t take up much space. You should have your upright piano tuned at least once a year. Some tuners will recommend tuning every 6mths depending on the condition of your piano. When purchasing a used upright, things such as broken strings, missing keys or other cosmetic damage can all be fixed. However, a cracked or broken soundboard cannot.

3. Acoustic Baby-Grand or Full-Grand Piano
Grand pianos are a beautiful home addition and wonderful family investment. Go to your nearest piano store to learn more about the different options and styles. As with an upright, many grand pianos can be purchased used, although are not as easy to find as uprights. Your grand piano should be tuned at least once per year. Some tuners may recommend tuning every 6 months depending on the condition of your instrument.

Guitar Enrollment
To enroll in guitar lessons simply fill out our enrollment form. We look forward to working with you!

About the Guitar
Learning to play the acoustic or electric guitar is very motivating and fun. Guitars are generally the same size. Although, smaller scaled versions are available for the younger students. For those interested in being a “rock-star” we recommend beginning with an acoustic before going the electric route.

Age to Begin
All ages will benefit from learning to play the guitar. We recommend beginning students no younger than 6 or 7 years old due to finger dexterity.

Obtaining an instrument
The type of guitar purchased should be according to students/parents goals. If a student is interested in learning more Popular Style, an electric or steel string acoustic guitar is best. For those interested in Classical Style, students will need a nylon string classical guitar.

When purchasing a guitar for beginners, we recommend Fender (American, Japenese, or Mexican made) for electric guitars. For Classical guitars choose Fender or Yamaha. Always be sure to test out and play as many guitars as you can to find the one that works for you. Lastly, younger students will need a smaller scale guitars.

For strings, we recommend the following. For an electric guitar: Ernie Ball, size 9,10, or 11 (numbers refer to the size of the high "E" string with 9 being the smallest). For a classical guitar: D'addario EJ 45 Medium Tension.

Instrument Repair
Check with your teacher first, some repairs might be easier than they seem! Otherwise, any local music store that specializes in selling guitars usually has a technician who will be able to assist you.

Voice Lessons

Our Voice Teachers

Voice Enrollment
To enroll in voice lessons simply fill out our enrollment form. We look forward to working with you!

About the Voice
The great thing about learning this instrument is that we all have one! No purchase necessary and you have it with you, always! Sound is created with our vocal chords by air traveling over the vocal folds. After learning how to properly support air-flow and how to use your resonator (mouth and sinus cavity) you’ll be singing like a pro!

Age to Begin
All voice teachers have different ideas as-to when beginning vocal training. We all sing (even if it’s masked by the choir or only done in the shower!). However, serious vocal training too young may lead to serious vocal damage. For this reason, most teachers recommend beginning voice lessons no earlier then age 12 and serious vocal training no earlier than High School.

Percussion Enrollment
To enroll in percussion lessons simply fill out our enrollment form. We look forward to working with you!

About Percussion
Percussion ranges from a wide variety of instruments such as drum-sets, hand drums, marimbas, xylophones, and metallophones… chimes, hand bells, cymbals, gongs, claves, shakers, and more! Since there are many different areas of percussion- a consultation with a teacher may be needed to assist with what materials will be required for private instruction. For traditional drum-set lessons the following equipment is required:

Drum Sticks: beginners should start with a larger barreled model (barrel referring to diameter) such as a 5B or BA. A few brands we recommend include Vic Firth, Pro Marc, Vater, or Innovative Percussion.

Practice Pad: a practice pad will also be needed in order to practice sticking rudiments and other such exercises.

Drum-set or Snare Drum: either a full drum-set or a single snare drum will also be required for drum-set lessons. A few quality beginner brands we recommend include Pearl, Yamaha, Pacific, Gretch, and Ludwig.

For more detailed advice when purchasing percussion equipment, visit your local percussion store. See below for stores in Kansas City.

Age to Begin
Due to younger children’s size, beginning drum-set lessons is recommended after age 12. However, other percussion instruments such as hand drums, bells, xylophones, metallophones, etc. can be started at a much earlier age.
